Dean’s Fellowship Opportunity with
National Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project

The National Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project (NIWAP, pronounced new-app) is an experiential learning opportunity at the American University Washington College of Law. NIWAP’s work benefits immigrant women, children, and immigrant survivors of domestic abuse, sexual assault, human trafficking, and other crimes. We are a national provider of training, legal and social science research, policy development, and technical assistance to advocates, attorneys,pro bono law firms, law schools, universities, law enforcement, prosecutors, social service and health care providers, justice system personnel, and other professionals who work with immigrant women, children and crime victims.

NIWAP is seeking a full-time Dean’s fellow to join us this summer. Current students at the Washington College of Law will be paid at $12.50/hour. Non-AU students are welcome to apply as a volunteer. The work may include an opportunity to work on the following types of projects:

    • Develop training materials and conduct legal research to assist courts and judges in cases involving unaccompanied minors, immigrant crime victims, and immigrant women and children;
    • Work with judicial education staff at the state level to plan statewide trainings for judges on U visa certification and issues that arise in family courts;
    • Develop materials for judges on Special Immigrant Juvenile Status and issues that arise in state courts;
    • Edit existing training materials on immigrant crime victims’ legal rights for judges and court staff;
    • Researching and writing materials on policy and best practices involving advocating for victims of human trafficking.
    • Assist NIWAP legal staff in responding to technical assistance requests from state, local and federal government agencies and from advocates and attorneys across the country.

Undergraduate or Graduate Internship Opportunity with
National Immigrant Women’s Advocacy Project

NIWAP is seeking to hire undergraduate and graduate students full-time this summer. Current American University students will be paid at $11.50/hour. Non-AU students are welcome to apply as a volunteer. The work may include an opportunity to work on the following types of projects:

  • Assist NIWAP staff attorneys with legal, social science, and policy research to assist advocates, attorneys, law enforcement, courts and judges in cases involving unaccompanied minors, immigrant crime victims, and immigrant women and children;
  • Coordinate trainings for judges, law enforcement, and others on immigrant victim certification in cases of immigrant crime victims and national training on immigrant victims legal rights;
  • Work on training materials for our local, regional, statewide, and nationwide trainings and webinars;
  • Update and reorganize NIWAP’s national resource library, available at niwaplibrary.wcl.american.edu, track copyright permissions, find new public documents to upload;
  • Assist in grant writing;
  • Manage and expand NIWAP’s social media platform;
  • Create and implement materials distribution plans and an advertising campaign to increase awareness of NIWAP resources including the web library, directory of programs with experience serving immigrant victims, and technical assistance;
  • Facilitate communication between the director and policy makers, grantors, law enforcement, and others;
  • Schedule flights and make other travel arrangements;
  • Help process payments and reimbursements;
  • Assist NIWAP legal staff with intake and answering legal inquiries from around the country about issues specific to immigrant victims of crime.

Experience using WordPress, HTML, or statistical software, especially SPSS, is a plus.
